Basque Country's past and present Gugghenheim, a modern world class museum combined with Guernica, a historical Basque heritage site GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM Designed by the North American architect Frank O. Gehry, this unique Museum built on a 32,500 square meter site in the center of Bilbao. The building itself is an extraordinary combination of interconnecting shapes. Impressive limestone blocks contrast with curved architectural forms covered in titanium. Glass curtain walling provides the building with the light and transparency it needs. Explore the museum by yourself, an audio guide is included in the ticket price. BILBAO CITY TOUR We will make a short city tour of Bilbao covering its most atractive parts and will have lunch in the old town of the city BASQUE HISTORY IN GUERNICA Last stop in Guernica. On April 26th 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, the town was razed to the ground by German aircrafts, sent by Hitler to support Franco’s troops. When Picasso painted the Guernika in 1937, could not imagine that its vision of the bombing would become antiwarlike symbol. OPTIONAL FOR ART LOVERS If you are an art lover, we could organize the day visiting the Guggenheim museum in the morning and then come back near to San Sebastian to visit the open air sculpture museum of the famous local artist Eduardo Chillida, called Chillida-Leku in the afternoon. Chillida-Leku is the culmination of one of the artist's lifelong dreams: to create a space for his work where it could be on permanent display. This monographic museum is a faithful representation of the sculptor's fifty year long artistic career. Chillida-Leku is the perfect setting to enjoy the full magnitude of this internationally-known artist. The museum is divided into three areas: A 12-hectare hillside (nearly 30 acres) with beech trees, oaks and magnolias studded with over 40 sculptures. A service area featuring an auditorium, with images of the artist at work projected continuously, a rest area, and a gift shop. And finally, the centrepiece of the museum is the Zabalaga farmhouse, which houses the smaller format pieces in corten steel, alabaster, granite, terracotta, plaster, wood and paper. Chillida-Leku is a sculpture in itself - another work of art in which the sculptor perfectly captures and renders his vision of shape, space and the passing of time. Chillida’s questions become answers as visitors make their way through the museum grounds. I'm not embarrassed to say I'm not artistic so although they were moments I found interesting I wouldn't go again. Too expensive for the likes of me who don't really enjoy art.

A must see attraction if visiting Bilbao .... This truly amazing architectural wonder is just packed with must see art installations externally and beautiful and occasionally humorous art works internally Take the audio trail as it offers the visitor a very informative insight into the construction of this marvel whilst also details the art fixtures and installations ! Not forgetting the " Puppy " floral wonder in the museum foreground ... Just amazing

I'll admit from the beginning that modern art is not my interest or can I understand it, and initially had decided just to view the outside of this very impressive architectural building. But when in Bilbao and wanting to fully explore this city we decided we really should visit, to take a free museum guided tour that way we might understand the contents a little better. From the outside the building is stunning as are the huge animal art sculptures: the giant spider, 'Maman' by Louise Bourgeois and the gorgeous flower 'Puppy' by Jeff Koons. After entering the museum we made our way over to the information desk, the starting point for the guided tours. Unfortunately on our day we are the only two guests wanting to the take the tour and the tour only runs with a minimum of four, what difference does it make if there are only two, the point is the museum is prepared to run it, staff available. So we self guide ourselves through this large glass, steel and concrete building. We enjoy the art installations out on the small terrace: a bunch of large tulips and three dancing mosaic ladies. The huge steel construction titled 'The Matter of Time' by Richard Serra is designed for the public to experience, to walk through. It is quite disorientating, and can affect your balance as it did mine. The Guggenheim was a disappointment for us, it was disappointing that the guided tour is only offered with a minimum of four. The only good thing was that our entry fee was reduced based on the purchase of an Bono Artean Pass, this is a combined ticket for the Guggenheim and the Fine Arts Museum, which lasts a whole year.

The building is what gives the wow factor. We enjoy modern art but this will not be for everyone. If you do not want to pay to enter the Guggenheim the walk to see the outside sculptures is rewarding itself. The huge flowered "scotty" flower dog is a highlight.
